Dear Friends and Family,
We are pleased to tell you that the 5th annual Phil Everson Memorial Scholarship has been awarded to a graduating student of St. Lawrence Secondary School in Cornwall, Ont. As you know, this scholarship was initiated after Phil Everson, a former St. Lawrence student, died suddenly after completing the Ottawa Army Run in September of 2019. It was always Phil’s intention to give back to St. Lawrence S.S. in some way. Because of the generosity of many donors like yourself, Phil’s intention has become reality and this year the fund was able to generate a $2866.00 scholarship.
The 2024 Phil Everson Memorial Scholarship has been awarded to Kaitlyn MacLennan. Kaitlyn graduated with her Immersion Certificate, is an Ontario Scholar and was one of St. Lawrence’s valedictorians.
This fall, Kaitlyn will be attending Bishop’s University in the Concurrent Education program with the goal of becoming an elementary teacher. Another one of Kaitlyn’s goals is to become a motivational speaker. She has spoken to her highschool’s teaching staff and at the Queen’s University Relay for Life.
Kaitlyn’s life has not been without challenge. In 2021, Kaitlyn was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, also known as the Terry Fox cancer. While undergoing operations, chemotherapy, and physio, she maintained an 80 average in school. There were many complications, and in November 2023 Kaitlyn had to make the difficult decision to have her leg amputated. In February of 2024, Kaitlyn received her prosthetic leg, and it has improved her quality of life immensely.
Despite the challenges of illness, Kaitlyn maintained her kind and generous spirit and found time to give back to her community. She has volunteered for “Rachel’s Kids”, an organization in Cornwall that focuses on improving the lives of children in need, both locally and globally. As well, she has volunteered at Viscount Alexander P.S., assisting students with special needs and reading with students. Kaitlyn is very close to her family, calling her sister her best friend. She enjoys playing cards, swimming and playing badminton.
Thank you again for being a part of a wonderful community of donors. You have made a significant investment in our youth and have helped Nico pursue his post-secondary studies.
With gratitude,
Johneen, Tom & Rebecca Everson
