For every one new affordable home built with government assistance in Ottawa, the community loses seven older affordable homes in the private market – with rents rising faster than wages and renovations pushing tenants from their homes. It’s one reason City Council declared a Housing and Homelessness Emergency in 2020. Affordable housing is increasingly out-of-reach.
In response, across the national capital region, housing partners are collaborating with the Ottawa Community Land Trust (OCLT) to preserve housing affordability. Efforts are underway to transition existing rental properties from the private market into community ownership, to be managed by experienced non-profits and co-ops. In short, these partners are committed to supporting tenants and keeping housing affordable in this area. Forever.
By giving to the Affordable Housing Forever Fund, you are assisting in the preservation of affordable housing for our neighbours – for today, and for the future. Together, we can build a city where everyone has an affordable home to live.
