The Tumber family traces its roots to the Lyallpur region in Pakistan. Sardar Sucha Singh, born in 1921, was committed to education and earned a Master in Art in History and English from the prestigious Government College in Lahore. He started a family in Lasara, Punjab, India, after marrying Bibi Mohinder Kaur in 1946. Sardar Sucha Singh was a teacher and wrote several books on Sikh History. Bibi Mohinder Kaur passed the gift of education on to their children, Ravinder Tumber, Charanjit Singh, and Manjit Kaur.

In 1990, they moved to Canada, where Sardar Sucha Singh was a regular columnist for various Punjabi language publications. The two sons became successful restauranteurs. Ravinder and his wife Gurdev opened Host India in Ottawa; Charanjit and his wife opened Rangoli in Orleans.

The Tumber Family Fund supports local charities working on food security, education, empowering women, and reducing poverty and honours the memory of Sardar Sucha Singh and Bibi Mohinder Kaur. They passed away in 2002 and 2014, respectively. The next generation of the Tumber family plans to continue giving back to the community that welcomed them.
