Marion Dewar Scholarship Fund: A Lasting Tribute to an Ottawa Legend
In the fall of 2008, Ottawa mourned the sudden, tragic loss of one of the city's best-loved mayors and champions for immigrants and refugees, Marion Dewar. Best known for galvanizing the community around Project 4,000, through which the city welcomed thousands of Southeast Asian refugees in the late '70s. Marion Dewar later gave new hope to a number of refugees who were some of the first clients of the Ottawa Community Immigrant Services Organization (OCISO), now an invaluable resource for new Canadians settling in Ottawa. more...

Urbandale Construction Celebrates 30 Years: Company continues tradition of giving back

The Community Foundation of Ottawa had the great fortune to be invited to celebrate Urbandale Construction's 30th anniversary in 2009 by helping them to design and deliver a unique giving program for new home buyers throughout the year. An incentive to help their customers learn more about the community while also tangibly supporting a number of organizations and causes locally, the program presented home buyers with the opportunity to choose a local charity to support once they completed the purchase of their new home. more ...

Carlington Community Health Centre:  Where Everyone Matters

Carlington Community Health Centre provides a wide variety of programming in the communities of Carlington, Bellevue, Carleton Heights and Scott Hill/Van Lang in Ottawa. Some of the most successful programs the Centre runs are for children and youth, including two homework clubs, an after-school program and a youth drop-in program. In 2009, the Community Foundation of Ottawa provided emergency funding for after-school program transportation, and supported various Carlington initiatives, including the new Keeping it Cool (KIC) program. more ...

Igniting the Fire: A Culture Camp for Aboriginal Youth

The Wabano Centre for Aboriginal Health has been serving Ottawa's urban Aboriginal community for ten years now. With a mandate to provide quality, holistic, culturally-relevant health services to Inuit, Métis and First Nations communities of Ottawa, the Wabano Centre has always aimed high in its program planning. In 2009, the centre delivered March Break and summer camps that definitely hit their marks. more ...

Community Laundry Co-op: Building Community "One Load at a Time"

In October 2009, the Community Laundry Co-operative (CLC) celebrated its 10th anniversary of providing affordable laundry services to low-income residents of Ottawa. Located in Heartwood House in centretown, the co-op has created a sense of community for its members, providing a vital network of support to go along with every clean load of laundry. more ...

Rideau Valley Wildlife Sanctuary: Animal Haven in the Ottawa Valley

The Rideau Valley Wildlife Sanctuary (RVWS) has been in operation since 2005 and is the only Ottawa-area sanctuary with a mandate to take in, rehabilitate and release injured and orphaned small mammals. Run by Linda Laurus and a group of dedicated volunteers, RVWS almost became a casualty of its own success in 2008 when Linda no longer had enough space in her North Gower farmhouse to care for all the animals that were being brought to her door. more ...
