“This past fall, The Kidney Foundation of Canada received a grant for a Kidney Friendly Cooking and Nutrition Workshop. Kidney disease is a chronic progressive disease and there is no cure. One of the best ways patients can slow the trajectory of their disease, maintain their existing organ function and delay the need to start dialysis, is through diet. A kidney-friendly diet is complex and includes managing the intake of nutrients such as sodium, phosphorous and potassium to name a few. Newly diagnosed patients often find this overwhelming and this initiative was a helpful tool in providing guidance, communal enjoyment of good food and building knowledge to empower patients and care-givers to embrace this life-style change. The kidney diet is also important for transplant recipients to help them prolong the good function of their transplanted organ. We were very pleased with the results of this event and are looking to replicate it in partnership with other community groups this coming spring. Thank you to the Ottawa Community Foundation for this important investment in the health of kidney patients in Ottawa.” – The Kidney Foundation of Canada, Ontario Branch
